About Us

Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities Services stands as a beacon of support and opportunity in the historic towns of Trinidad and Walsenburg, CO. Nestled just north of the New Mexico border, Trinidad embodies the charm of old western towns, enriched by the stunning vistas along the famous Highway of Legends.

A Brief History of Our Agency

Founding

Established in 1965 as the Las Animas County Center for the Handicapped (LACCH), we began our journey by providing educational opportunities through the Alta Vista School, one of Colorado's original community center schools for children with developmental disabilities.

Expansion

Initially serving only Las Animas County (Trinidad), we expanded our services to Huerfano County (Walsenburg) under a separate board. Recognizing the benefits of regionalization, the boards eventually merged to enhance service delivery and cost efficiency.

Growth and Development

The Las Animas County Rehabilitation Center was opened in 1971, initially serving 13 adults in Trinidad, followed by the establishment of a Walsenburg Day Program as a satellite of Las Animas County Rehabilitation Center.

Collaboration

In 1991, Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities Services and Las Animas County Rehabilitation Center combined resources and formed a unified Board of Directors, paving the way for a more integrated approach to care.

Current Impact

Today, Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities Services proudly serves approximately 140 individuals in Trinidad and Walsenburg. We offer tailored programs for around 30 children through early intervention, Consumer-Employed Services (CES), and Family Support programs, and 110 adults participating in initiatives promoting independence, community inclusion, and supported employment.

We are dedicated to fostering environments that support personal choice, independence, and active community involvement for individuals and their families. Our programs are designed around the fundamental philosophy of person-centered choices, ensuring that each individual receives the guidance and support they need to flourish in their community.
